How to Grow Your Laser Hobby into a Full-Time Business

CEO

Hi friends! I’m Marina Neff, the creator behind @deck.to.farm.charm. I specialize in modern dollhouses and miniatures. I started this hobby during the early days of the pandemic in 2020, and it quickly evolved into a full-time career. I began by selling miniature decor pieces on Etsy while renovating old dollhouses. My mini renovation videos gained a lot of attention on social media, which led to celebrity clients and collaborations with large corporations. I’ve also been featured on Good Morning America and Zillow.

These days, I travel across the country, attending miniature conventions about 8 times a year! Over time, I’ve built a community of enthusiasts who appreciate my modern approach to dollhouse interior design.

Painting 101 for Laser Makers: From Prep to Final Touches

Woodworking Artist

This summer marks a full decade in business as Kendra’s Got Wood. It all started with some old pallets, a hammer, and a little paint, and I just kept building from there. Over the years I picked up new tools, including a scroll saw, which took my work to the next level. Eventually, I added a laser machine, and it was a game changer. Now, on my second CO2 laser, I’ve grown my business into a full brand, selling not only the art I create but also the design so makers can create their versions with their own unique touch. I love sharing my process, techniques, and the tools and materials that make it all happen.

Getting Started with a 5W UV Laser: Engraving Glass, Silicone, Wood & Metal

Teacher

My entrepreneurship journey began during the 2020 quarantine when life as we knew it came to a halt. With limited options for shopping and a Teacher Appreciation Day gift to find for our daughter, we found ourselves in a bind. Unable to leave our home and with local businesses closed, we decided to get creative.

We potted some plants, added a cute tag, and listed them on Facebook. To our surprise , local parents loved the idea and were grateful for a convenient way to pick up a thoughtful gift right from our porch.

That moment sparked something special. We realized we had stumbled upon a unique opportunity. What started with plant gifts soon evolved into a broader range of handmade items.

Over the years Primary Market has evolved. And while I love the retail aspect of our business, I’m realizing teaching and education is my passion! In the past two years I’ve helped many fellow makers in their laser business and it brings me so much joy and satisfaction!

Mastering Tumbler Engraving: Lenses, Focus, and the Theory of Three

Designer / Maker

Hi! I’m Kristen, and I’m completely addicted to laser engraving tumblers! Every time I add a new laser to my studio, it’s immediately equipped with a rotary—rarely to be removed again. There’s just something magical about achieving that perfect engrave, knowing it will bring joy, create a moment, or capture a memory.
As a longtime digital designer, I expanded into laser designs in 2023 and quickly found my passion for tumblers. While I’ve dabbled in flat projects, tumblers have my heart. Since I always test designs before releasing them, I ended up surrounded by tumblers—so naturally, I started selling them! Now, with three successful 5-star Etsy shops and over 70 variations of brand and non-brand tumblers, I spend my days (and nights!) crafting new designs and fulfilling customer orders.
It feels like a lifetime ago that I worked a corporate job because now, I’m living my dream—creating, designing, and spreading happiness one laser-engraved tumbler at a time!

Woodworker

Hey! My name is D’ondra, Founder of Workboots and Glasses, Custom Furniture Maker in Sacramento.  My custom furniture inspiration came from watching a self-taught woodworker share her story on Instagram. After watching all of her highlighted videos until 1am, I told myself that if I felt that same passion the following morning, I would dive right in and give it a try myself. Sure enough, the next morning, I got up, went to Home Depot, bought a miter saw and some wood, and went to work. I have been building custom furniture every day since!

Robin is a fine artist turned successful laser file designer who discovered laser cutting by mistake — and turned it into a thriving business. Laser + Leather: Your First Project Made Simple

Maker

Hey! I'm Olie, and I run Copper Cactus Collective and Olie's Images with my girlfriend Brenna. I started Olie's Images in 2014 and soon began creating my own merchandise to promote it. Eventually, people around me started asking me to design their merchandise as well. In 2023, we decided that the physical products side was growing enough to stand on its own. That's where Copper Cactus Collective originated. Now we create leather goods like leather patch hats, bracelets, car freshies, and much more with the help of our lasers.

Lasers are wonderful tools with the capability to use a wide variety of materials however, we needed to focus to make it work. We chose leather because we love the aesthetic. Each piece is unique and can be used to make a variety of products. I come from a horse and rodeo background and Brenna comes from an agricultural background. So, using real cowhide leather is naturally what our customers like too. The patina that you get over time with the real stuff just can’t be beat.

Leaning into Authenticity

Maker

Kelsey Powless is an Indigenous woodworker from Six Nations of the Grand River. Her passion for woodworking started in 2018 after finding inspiration at a Christmas night market. Never having operated a power tool in her life, Kelsey quickly learned her way around a scrollsaw and started creating custom 3D signs for her local community. 3 months later, Kelsey brought Powless + Co. to life and has been creating custom works of art ever since.

Through her crafts(wo)manship it has been the mission of Powless + Co. to assist in the revitalization of Indigenous culture and languages. At its core, this will always be an area of eternal learning; however, Kelsey believes that if she can help you learn one new Indigenous word through her art and spark conversations - you are both on the right path to revitalization.
